The Conroe ISD School Health Advisory Council authorized its student physical-safety subcommittee to pursue targeted interviews and, if approved by the board, to gather qualitative input on electric micro-mobility devices (EMDs) — including ebikes and electric scooters — and school commutes.

Subcommittee chair (S5) described a plan to run 30-minute recorded interviews with school leaders, crossing guards, PTO representatives and selected parents and staff from each feeder zone. "The idea would be to limit these to 30 minute interviews ... to code the data from it afterwards to understand what kinds of themes and patterns are emerging," S5 said.

Members noted district incident data on EMDs is limited and that interest likely varies by feeder; one member reported an elementary principal circulated a campus-level email banning motorized bikes and scooters at that school, but SHAC members asked staff to confirm whether that ban is district-wide or campus-specific.

After discussion on recruitment strategy, sampling across feeder zones and the feasibility of interviews versus surveys, SHAC moved and approved a motion to submit the interview questions to the district and board for approval and to proceed with interviews once authorized. The motion passed by a show-of-hands vote; no formal tally was recorded in the transcript.

The subcommittee said it will coordinate with district administration to solicit participants through principals, PTO channels and other targeted outreach, and will provide an option for respondents to answer a survey instead of participating in an interview if needed.

Next steps: subcommittee to finalize interview instrument, submit questions to the board for approval, and coordinate district outreach for a representative sample of feeder zones so recommendations reflect geographic differences.
