Superintendent Dr. Michelle Reid told the Fairfax County School Board and more than 40 public speakers on Jan. 13 that she will post amended boundary recommendations on Thursday after staff reviewed community feedback and enrollment numbers.
Reid said she will phase many of the proposed changes rather than move all students in a single year. She named specific areas she plans to amend or defer: Walnut Oaks (SPA 4420) can proceed in 2026; staff will run additional numbers for Cardinal Forest/Keene Mill and may revise that adjustment; Rolling Valley (SPA 8922), several neighborhoods in the Graham Road/Pine Springs corridor, and portions of Beechtree, Bryn Mawr (north of I‑395), Crossfield/Lees Corner and Kingsley Commons will be studied with an aim to return recommendations in January 2027.
"So there are a couple areas that I want to clarify, that I likely will be providing some amended recommendations," Reid said, adding that the board had heard extensive community feedback at a Jan. 10 hearing and that staff had rechecked data over the weekend.
Reid said the Poe AAP center will move forward for 2026 but staff will analyze how that change affects Glasgow Middle School enrollment before finalizing related recommendations. She told the board she will post the rationale for any amendments Thursday evening and that additional changes may follow depending on testimony received that night.
At the meeting start the board approved one procedural item: a vote permitting Mr. Frisch to participate virtually for medical reasons. The clerk read the vote as 7–1.
The board will take final action on the superintendent’s proposed boundary adjustments at its regular meeting on Jan. 22, 2026, and will consider the FY27–31 Capital Improvement Program at the Feb. 12, 2026 meeting.
Why it matters: The boundary review is the first districtwide update in decades and will change feeder patterns, program access and travel for affected students. Reid’s decision to phase changes and post amendments reflects the scale of public concern, particularly among families in the Justice/Glasgow pyramid and small communities such as Beech Tree and Crossfield.
Next steps: The board is scheduled to vote on Jan. 22 on the boundary adjustments and on Feb. 12 on the CIP. Reid’s posted amendments (Thursday) will be available on the district website and serve as the basis for final board consideration.
