Commission finalizes voluntary annexation of 227 acres across 11 parcels

The City of Newberry approved ordinances on Jan. 12 adopting the voluntary annexation of multiple parcels from unincorporated Alachua County. City staff said the package covered seven applications and 11 parcels totaling about 227 acres and that the ordinances provide for land-use and zoning designations and enforcement under city standards.
The annexations were read into the record by the city attorney and were approved by motions from commissioners with voice votes recorded as unanimous on the various items. Staff said several of the items were second-reading actions and were final.
City staff explained that the annexations were petitioned by property owners pursuant to section 171.044, Florida Statutes, and that the ordinances provide for subsequent application of the City's land development regulations and zoning on the annexed parcels. Commissioners offered brief welcome remarks as the votes passed and asked staff to follow up on the filings necessary to implement the new city oversight.
