Glendale Commission on the Status of Women establishes three ad hoc committees and assigns members

Glendale — The Glendale Commission on the Status of Women voted Jan. 12 to establish three permanent ad hoc committees and approved membership assignments.
Chair Romella Markarian opened the meeting and, after discussion, the commission approved a motion to create the following committees: Evaluate and Assess (covering policy development, advocacy and advising); Outreach and Education; and Fundraising, Programming and Partnerships. "I would like to suggest that the commission reconsider the formulation of our committees," Commissioner Kojayan said, proposing the initial consolidation. The motion to approve the committee names passed on a roll-call vote with all present voting yes.
Commissioners then volunteered for and were formally assigned to each committee as staff read back the membership. Staff reported the memberships as follows: Evaluate & Assess — Commissioner Lambelotte, Commissioner Hojayan, and student Commissioner Park; Outreach & Education — Vice Chair Arum, Commissioner Lambelotte, and student Commissioners Kachaturian and Park; Fundraising, Programming & Partnerships — Chair Romella Markarian, Commissioner Hojayan, and student Commissioners Kachaturian and Park. A subsequent motion to approve those assignments passed by roll call.
Commissioners discussed how the committees would work and what they would tackle. One commissioner cautioned that the city’s Report on the Status of Women is produced only every several years and that a full update would be expensive: "I don't think we would revise the whole thing... it's at least $25,000," the commissioner said, and suggested student ex officios could contribute to a partial update instead of redoing the entire report.
Staff clarified rules on subgroup composition: while commissioners may participate beyond two members, meetings with more than two commissioners would become public meetings subject to additional agenda posting and procedural requirements. The commission agreed ad hocs are advisory and any program or event recommended by an ad hoc would return to the full commission for a vote.
Staff also previewed March’s International Women’s Day activity and said staff will request a proclamation on the City Council agenda and coordinate with the downtown Glendale Association. Commissioners congratulated the newly sworn student ex officios and noted the city took a photo for the city Instagram page.
The meeting ended with staff agreeing to reach out to committee members to schedule ad hoc meetings and to bring an International Women’s Day update to the February meeting.
