Renton proclaims Jan. 13, 2026, Korean American History Day

Mayor Armando Pavoni read and signed a proclamation declaring Jan. 13, 2026 to be Korean American History Day in the City of Renton, commemorating the arrival of the first Korean immigrants in 1903 and recognizing contributions of Korean Americans to education, business, medicine, the arts and public service.
Hwang Park, board chair for the Korean Women’s Association, accepted the recognition and told the council that the proclamation is meaningful and timely, stressing that belonging is about contribution and how residents show up for each other. The proclamation was moved, seconded and adopted by voice vote.
The proclamation text notes that King County has the largest Korean American population in the state (roughly 48,000 residents) and that more than 1,000 Korean American residents call Renton home. The mayor encouraged residents to join the observance.
