Mount Pleasant approves $50,000 EDC match for high‑demand job training grant

The City Council approved a request on Jan. 7 to provide up to $50,000 from the Economic Development Corporation as a local match for a Texas Workforce Commission high‑demand job training grant.
Kevin Carter, EDC director, described the program as a TWC matching grant for communities that the EDC can use to support career and technical education at local school districts and Northeast Texas Community College. Carter said, "it would put $50,000 of the EDC's money up with, 50,000 from Texas Workforce Commission," and that the EDC's request is contingent on the grant award.
Carter said the combined funding (EDC match plus the TWC match) would be allocated as follows: $30,000 to Mount Pleasant ISD, $20,000 to Chapel Hill (ISD), $20,000 to Hearts Bluff, and $30,000 to Northeast Texas Community College; the total distribution equals $100,000 when the TWC match is included. He added that the funds must be used for equipment (for example, welding or robotics equipment) and that purchases will follow applicable bid processes. Carter said the EDC board previously approved the match on Nov. 13.
A council member moved to approve the EDC match (up to $50,000); a second was recorded and the council voted in favor.
