Buchanan said the department reduced homicides from a high during the COVID‑era spike to 10 in the most recent year and that investigators cleared those cases. He reported year‑over‑year drops in aggravated assaults and vehicle thefts and noted a goal to reach CALEA (Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) certification by October.
The chief summarized investments the department has received in recent months — evidence‑room upgrades, a new 9‑1‑1/dispatch refresh, drones, a full‑service canine and a bomb dog — and said the department will start a Safe Neighborhood Operations (SNOW) unit and a hotel/neighborhood security team in advance of major visitor events. Buchanan also described 9‑1‑1 response improvements and said the department plans community outreach including a Citizens Police Academy.
