City Manager Eubank reported hiring progress, recruitment for key positions and that Aleutian Air has an ATR 600 aircraft dedicated to Kenai–Anchorage service, likely improving reliability; he also flagged upcoming tribal meetings and a temporary closure at the Kenai Multipurpose Facility for a tournament.
City Manager Eubank updated the Kenai City Council on staffing and aviation service at the Jan. 7 meeting.
Eubank said the city will welcome a new chief animal control officer starting Monday and continues recruiting for a firefighter, airport manager, building official and one police officer. He noted a long-time water-and-sewer employee retired Jan. 2 after more than 21 years of service.
On air service, Eubank said Aleutian Air brought an ATR 600 to the field and has FAA approval for the aircraft. The carrier plans to start dedicated service between Anchorage and Kenai (and Homer), using a 42- to 44-seat configuration initially, and the aircraft is expected to create a more reliable schedule because it will be dedicated to those routes rather than rotating from remote outposts. "They anticipate it's gonna create more reliable service for here," Eubank said.
Eubank also reminded council the Kenai Multipurpose Facility will be closed this weekend for a hockey tournament and listed upcoming joint work sessions with tribal councils to be held at Kenai City Hall.
No council action was required; these were informational administrative reports.
