Council honors Delta Sigma Theta and Alpha Kappa Alpha with proclamations

Birmingham — The council paused regular business on Jan. 13 to recognize two historically Black sororities and their community contributions. Mayor Randall L. Woodson read a proclamation recognizing Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc. on its 113th Founders' Day and invited chapter members to the podium. Natasha Burnett, president of the Birmingham Alumnae Chapter, thanked the council and urged continued advocacy on public safety and civic engagement.
Councilors then moved unanimous consent to present a resolution naming Jan. 15 as Alpha Kappa Alpha Day in Birmingham and acknowledged the sorority’s upcoming Southeastern Regional Conference, which will host thousands of members in Birmingham April 29–May 2. Malera Treylor Wright and Tammy Fincher, conference representatives, invited the public and the council to a public meeting planned for April 30.
Councilors and the mayor recognized the civic work of both organizations and encouraged residents to participate in the announced community service activities, including delivery of greeting cards to nursing‑home residents and public conference events.
The proclamations were adopted by unanimous consent and the council recessed into the rest of its agenda.
