City officials announced approval of a $1.4 million Community Development Block Grant to fund sewer lining, manhole lining and generators for the water treatment plant and booster station; staff credited resident survey participation for the award.
City staff told the Torrington City Council Jan. 6 that the city has received approval for a $1.4 million Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) project to support sewer lining, manhole lining and generators for the water treatment plant and booster station.
Lynette Strecker, city clerk/treasurer, said the city applied for two CDBG grants last summer; one project is already in progress (sewer lining), and the second — for generators at the water plant and booster station — required a community survey. "It's a $1,400,000 grant, so it's a big deal," Strecker said, and she thanked office and water-department staff and citizens who completed surveys that enabled the award.
Strecker said the city will use the funding to ensure continued water service during power outages and stressed the importance of reliable electrical backup for water infrastructure. The council applauded staff work and stressed timely implementation of the grant-funded projects.
The council did not vote separately on the CDBG announcement during the meeting; Strecker presented the award as progress on ongoing infrastructure work and as a significant fiscal benefit for Torrington.
