Seattle Council unanimously extends interim FEMA floodplain rules for six months

The Seattle City Council unanimously approved an extension of interim floodplain regulations on Jan. 13 to allow residents and property owners continued access to flood insurance while the city completes updated rules.

The clerk read the Land Use Committee report recommending passage of the item — described as the tenth extension of interim FEMA floodplain regulations — adding six months so individuals can rely on updated National Flood Insurance Program rate maps from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Council Member Lynn, chair of the Land Use Committee, told the council the extensions date back to 2020 and pledged that this would be the final extension before the city brings forward permanent regulations. "This will be the last extension before we develop final regulations that we'll bring forward," Lynn said.

The bill was moved and seconded and passed on a roll-call vote with nine council members voting in favor and none opposed. Earlier in the meeting the council also adopted the introduction and referral calendar and the consent calendar by voice/roll call with a 9-0 tally.
