The Charleston County Board of Zoning Appeals on Jan. 5 approved a special exception allowing a one‑bedroom mother‑in‑law unit at 1976 Wild Wing Lane to operate as an extended home rental (EHR) that will accommodate up to four guests.
Staff introduced the application and recommended conditions including completion of STRP limited site plan review, compliance with Article 6.8 of the zoning code, a cap on aggregate days consistent with staff guidance, and adherence to the county noise ordinance. Anthony Andrews, who said he lives at the property, described the unit as small and owner‑occupied, told the board the family self‑manages bookings and said they had not received neighborhood complaints from prior limited‑home‑rental use.
Board discussion focused on parking, owner presence and compliance measures. A board member moved to approve the application subject to the staff‑recommended conditions; the motion passed unanimously. The BZA chair told the applicant staff would mail the board’s written decision within 10 days and provide next steps for permit issuance.
The decision grants the property owner the ability to apply for the zoning permit under the BZA’s findings and the stated conditions; renewal and enforcement will be handled by county staff in accordance with the ZELDR and local code provisions.
