Denton County honors longtime CERT leader Brenda Gormley with resolution and flag presentation

The Denton County Commissioners Court on Jan. 13 read and adopted a resolution honoring Brenda Gormley for decades of volunteer and county service, after announcing her death on Jan. 8.
The court’s presiding official, Judge Eads, read the resolution recounting Gormley’s work building the Denton County Community Emergency Response Team (CERT), noting national recognition and the program’s role training thousands of residents. “Brenda’s legacy lives on through all those who served with her,” the statement read as family members and emergency management partners looked on.
County Administrator Jody Gonzales described Gormley as “a volunteer of volunteers,” recalling that Gormley had volunteered for more than a decade before joining county staff and later became what Gonzales called a “full-time treasure” in 2017. Robin Bond, district director for Congressman Brandon Gill, said the congressman entered extended remarks into the Congressional Record honoring Gormley’s 24 years of public service.
Members of the county’s emergency management team, CERT volunteers and commissioners paid personal tribute. Sheriff Murphree and other officials thanked Gormley’s husband, Robert, and the court presented a framed American flag, challenge coins and a proclamation to the family as tokens of the county’s appreciation.
The resolution was adopted on a motion by the chair, seconded by Commissioner Mitchell, and carried unanimously. The court announced plans for a courthouse ceremony Friday and said posting of additional service details would follow online.
The court recessed briefly following the presentation before resuming its agenda.
