Superintendent: alarm triggered ALICE procedure at Boardwalk; wiring problem found and being fixed
Summary
Superintendent Peter reported a triggered alarm at Boardwalk Campus that prompted an ALICE response; staff followed procedures, no injuries were reported, and the district said faulty wiring must be corrected with vendors engaged to complete repairs.
The district superintendent reported at the Jan. 8 school committee meeting that an alarm at Boardwalk Campus recently triggered procedures consistent with an ALICE (Alert, Lockdown, Inform, Counter, Evacuate) event. He said staff responded as trained and that, during the follow-up inspection, the district discovered faulty wiring that must be repaired.
"That is a very, very frightening thing to have happen in this day and age," Superintendent Peter said, praising staff for their judgment and calm. He said the district is conducting after-action reviews and working with vendors to make necessary repairs and ensure the issue is resolved.
District leaders said the discovery is under active remediation and stressed that Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), services and placements remain protected and will continue to be provided. The administration did not report injuries related to the incident; it described the next steps as vendor-led electrical repairs and a continued review of alarm and building systems.
The committee acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and thanked staff for their response. The administration said it will report back to the committee with additional information as repairs progress.
