Commission hears comprehensive‑plan outreach update; city to enforce 2024 international codes March 1

At the Jan. 8 Planning & Zoning meeting, city staff updated commissioners on outreach for the comprehensive‑plan update and announced a code update enforcement date.

Aubrey said the advisory committee met in December and consultants are arranging a bus tour later this month using an FISD‑loaned school bus. Staff will distribute flyers and surveys through Friday folders at elementary and middle schools; Aubrey noted Wedgwood Elementary is the only school in CCISD composed entirely of Friendswood students, about 650 children, and will be a target for survey distribution. Consultants plan to attend a Feb. 10 FDEDC meeting and staff plan additional stakeholder meetings, including outreach to landowners in the Panhandle area and to high‑school groups.

On building codes, Aubrey reported the city has approved updating to the 2024 International Codes and the 2023 National Electrical Code and will begin enforcement March 1. She said staff have been notifying stakeholders and preparing flyers; inspectors will begin enforcing the updated codes on that date.

Councilmember Metranga, the city council liaison, told commissioners the City Council approved the commission’s recommended changes to proposed building heights at the City Center and postponed action on a PUD at 2351 to allow the developer to address noise and staging concerns.

What happens next: staff will proceed with outreach and finalize schedules for the bus tour and stakeholder meetings; code enforcement will implement the new codes beginning March 1, 2026.
