Committee authorizes bid solicitation for City Hall elevator modernization

The Parks, Recreation, Human Services and Public Safety Committee voted to forward authorization for staff to solicit bids for modernization of the City Hall lobby elevator to the Jan. 20 consent agenda.
Claribel Orajana presented the project and said the work is included in the approved budget with a $140,000 allocation. Staff noted the elevator control system is past its lifespan and that vendor support for the original OEM is no longer available; the current controls were described as decades-old technology. Staff cautioned the committee that bids may exceed the allocated amount and that they will return with award recommendations and a detailed schedule to minimize disruption.
Committee members pressed for an estimated downtime window; staff estimated the work could take a couple of weeks to a maximum of four weeks, and said they would explore scheduling and coordination (including aligning with room remodels) to reduce inconveniences for building users who require elevator access. Staff also described existing emergency procedures for assisting people who become stuck and said the city has emergency keys and established protocols.
The motion to authorize solicitation of bids for the elevator modernization was forwarded unanimously to the Jan. 20 consent agenda.
