The Kernersville Board of Aldermen voted unanimously Jan. 6 to approve a two-year lease for a field on Shields Road to continue the town's use of the site for parking and overflow during events.
Town Manager Curtis Swisher explained the property location and uses: parking for larger events, overflow for the Parks & Rec building and occasional event operations. He said the owner has been unwilling to sell but has leased the field at favorable rates and that the lease includes a first right of refusal if the owner later elects to sell.
The lease terms presented at the meeting were $10,000 for two years with optional renewal terms; staff said the owner returned a signed copy on the owner—nd the morning of the meeting. The board moved to approve the lease (motion wording at the meeting referenced "Enclave Properties"; the agenda item referenced "M. Clay Properties"). The motion was seconded and the vote was recorded as unanimous.
Staff said the field is used for parking during cross-country events and other large gatherings and that the town sometimes mows or allows haying; it will also be used to support a large April event at Ivy Redmond Park.
