Kernersville Board approves $5,200 for local classroom grants via Chamber program

The Kernersville Board of Aldermen voted unanimously Jan. 6 to send up to $5,200 to the Chamber of Commerce to fund six previously unfunded classroom grant projects for Kernersville schools.
Town Manager Curtis Swisher told the board the board previously discussed donating $5,000 to the Winston-Salem Foundation but instead recommended directing the money through the Chamber so that it would go directly to the local schools. Swisher said the projects selected were ranked by the Chamber—ommittee on criteria including mission alignment, creativity and number of students served.
Chamber volunteer Kim Herman and co-chair Pam Link described the committee—valuation process, noting the committee reviewed dozens of grant requests and identified six top-ranked projects in the Kernersville schools that were left unfunded. John Quigley, a member of the public who said he is retired from the school system, told the board: "the money's better served in our community here in Kernersville and the best people to do the transfer is to the chamber of commerce because they've done a terrific job."
Alderman Apple proposed adding one more project costing $270.60, bringing the total to $5,122.59, and moved a motion authorizing up to $5,200 to cover that amount. The motion was seconded by Mayor Pro Tem Gorham and passed unanimously.
The board asked staff to return with any additional sponsor funding or related updates when the town dvertises other events; staff said the Chamber would be instructed to apply the funds specifically to the named projects.
The board's action authorizes the town to provide the money to the Chamber with a stipulation that the funds be used for the listed Kernersville school projects. No further implementation details or contract terms were specified at the meeting.
