Ocean Township board reviews code of ethics as new president stresses reflection and student relationships

The Township of Ocean Board of Education reviewed the annual code of ethics and heard opening remarks from newly elected President Gerard Dalton at its Jan. 6 reorganization meeting.

Staff reminded members that the code of ethics materials from the New Jersey School Boards Association were included in the packet and that each member should sign an acknowledgment of receipt. The materials and prior trainings were reviewed by the board attorney at Bush Law Group, who advised the board that the New Jersey School Boards Association form provided clear guidance for members.

In his first remarks as president, Gerard Dalton framed the board’s priorities around reflection and partnership with the district administration. "Reflection is critical to our future growth," Dalton said, adding that schools are most effective when they are "welcoming, supportive, caring" and when students "learn best when there are human connections and relationships." Dalton cited an opinion by Dr. Maurice Elias of Rutgers University and referenced a Rita Pierson TED Talk to underscore the role of social-emotional learning and relationships in student success.

Board members briefly discussed possible changes to the summer meeting schedule. One member proposed combining June and July into a single monthly meeting during the summer months, with flexibility to add additional meetings if hiring or other business requires it. Miss Walden said she had no objection but asked for time to review specific weeks and dates.

The president’s remarks closed with a call for collegial accountability and teamwork as the board and administration undertake the year’s work. The meeting then completed routine business and adjourned after a motion to close the session.
