Board approves 2026–27 calendar after debate over pre‑Labor Day start and Thanksgiving timing

Executive director Amy O’Hearn and calendar committee members presented two draft calendars: one that starts the year prior to Labor Day and an alternative that starts after Labor Day. The central point of disagreement was whether to hold the Wednesday before Thanksgiving as a day off; union representatives opposed shortening winter break to create that holiday.

O’Hearn said the committee presented both options and preferred starting before Labor Day because it allowed the district to front‑load professional development and avoid coming back the day after Memorial Day. "We drafted 2 calendars, 1 that started prior to Labor Day and 1 that started after Labor Day," she said, noting the group weighed instruction, staff needs and family impacts.

Board members raised concerns about childcare needs for families and the need for broader community input; others stressed the importance of finalizing a calendar so families and staff can plan. A motion to approve the proposed 2026–27 calendar as presented passed by voice vote at the study session; the administration will publish details and communicate with families.
