Students honored: Rose Bowl Bands of America selection and county math field day winners

HARRISON COUNTY — The Harrison County Schools board used the start of Thursday’s meeting to spotlight student accomplishments, honoring Megan Sutton for a national band selection and presenting certificates to dozens of math field day winners across elementary, middle and high schools.

Megan Sutton, a Seabird High School sophomore selected for the 2026 Bands of America Rose Bowl Honor Band, told the board she rehearsed beginning Dec. 27 and marched in the Rose Parade on New Year’s Day. "We rehearsed almost every hour of every single day until January 1," Sutton said, and she thanked family members who traveled with her.

The board also announced winners from elementary through high school levels. Elementary winners included fourth-grade first-place Anaya Bassani of Johnson Grammar School; fifth-grade first-place Grayson Wilson of Johnson. Middle-school winners named across grade levels included Ian Stempel (sixth grade) and Anna Song (eighth grade). High-school winners were named by grade; the county team (10 students from grades 10–12) will compete at the regional math field day on March 21, 2026 at University High School with the goal of advancing to state competition.

Administrators and parents were invited to stand for recognition, and board members congratulated the students and teachers for their efforts. The board encouraged attendees to return for the regular agenda but noted the evening’s main business would follow the presentations.

The recognitions portion of the meeting was ceremonial; no board action was required or taken on the awards.
