Crescent City — The City Council on Oct. 6 introduced Ordinance No. 858 to add an alternative public‑notice procedure to the municipal code in the event there is no local newspaper of general circulation in Del Norte County.
City Attorney Rice told the council staff drafted the ordinance to align the municipal code with state law options that allow, when no qualifying local newspaper exists, public notices to be posted at three public locations (for example, library, city hall and the Flynn/Flint Center) or published in a neighboring county’s newspaper of general circulation. Staff said they also plan to post notices on the city website for accessibility, though the ordinance does not legally require that online posting.
Council members asked whether the city would use social media for legal notices; staff said Facebook posts are used selectively for public events but are not a substitute for legal notice unless council directs that practice. The council waived full reading, read the ordinance by title and introduced it; the vote was unanimous.
