The Crescent City Council on Monday presented the annual “Service Above Self” proclamation to Mary Doorman for extensive volunteer work with the American Red Cross and the Del Norte County emergency operations center.
City Manager Weir told the council the award commemorates Chief Steve Wakefield and his legacy of emergency service, noting Wakefield’s decades with Crescent City Fire and Rescue and that the council established Service Above Self Day in 2018. The mayor read a proclamation listing Doorman’s work installing smoke alarms, staffing disaster responses to the 2020 Slater Fire and the 2022 Rio Dell earthquake, organizing community events and supporting local service organizations.
“Through her work with the American Red Cross, Ms. Doorman has been instrumental in assisting countless families affected by personal and community disasters,” the proclamation said. Weir and others on the dais praised Doorman’s long record of volunteering and partnership with the fire department and emergency operations center.
Doorman was recognized publicly and posed for a photograph with council members after the proclamation was read. The council’s acknowledgment is ceremonial and does not carry regulatory action.
The council’s proclamation memorialized the legacy of Chief Steve Wakefield and underscored the city’s reliance on volunteers and nonprofit partners in emergency response.
