The Locust Valley Central School District Board of Education on Monday reviewed options to fill a current board vacancy for the remainder of the term and publicly invited community members to apply for consideration.
At the meeting the board outlined three choices: hold a brief special election to fill the seat immediately, leave it vacant until the regularly scheduled May election, or appoint an interim trustee for the balance of the school year, as the board did previously when it appointed Trustee Christina. "If you're so inclined and you're interested, please raise your hand. Go ahead and submit your resume along with a cover letter to our board email box and we'll be reviewing those," the meeting host said.
Board members said they are still reviewing the options and emphasized the tradeoffs. A special election would allow voters to choose a replacement but would require time and expense for an election just months before the regular cycle; leaving the seat vacant would defer the decision to the May election; an appointment would fill the seat more quickly but place selection authority with the trustees.
The board asked the administration to accept applications via the district email address and said it will continue discussions before making a decision. The board did not set a deadline for applications at the meeting.
