Hingham Middle School student council outlines service projects and leadership shift

Summary
Middle school student council members described five committees and recent projects — including staff appreciation activities and a Pink Day fundraiser that raised nearly $2,000 — and told the school committee they hope to collaborate with the high school and return for budget discussions.
Hingham Middle School students described how their newly organized student council has focused on community service, school spirit and staff appreciation during a presentation to the Hingham School Committee on Jan. 12.
Grayson Tiette, student council president, told the committee the council is student-led, averages 35 to 40 students per meeting and has about 75 members overall. He said students organized service projects and community-building events that ‘‘bring a smile to my face.’’
Students outlined five committees: staff appreciation, community service, spirit, public relations and fundraising. Leila Barnes, head of staff appreciation, described a fall activity in which students wrote gratitude notes on decorative leaves that were delivered to teachers. Leah Massey, head of fundraising, said the council’s Pink Day fundraiser raised nearly $2,000 for breast cancer awareness; the council coordinated with the fundraiser’s director to transfer proceeds after counting and verification.
Student leaders also said the group restructured from an ambassador model to a council to increase student ownership and better align with the high school’s student council. Committee members suggested connecting Hingham Middle School advisers with high school advisers to allow joint meetings and mentoring; the district expressed support for that idea.
The presentation closed with thanks to faculty advisors Tim Galvin and Sarah Cassidy; committee members encouraged students to return for the budget meeting to offer fundraising expertise. The committee did not take any formal action on the presentation.
