Nelson County supervisors elect 2026 chair, approve organizational resolution and appointments

Jessica Libby was chosen chair and Jesse Rutherford vice chair of the Nelson County Board of Supervisors during the board's Jan. 13 organizational meeting, and supervisors adopted their annual organizational resolution with amendments to committee appointments.
The board voted to adopt Resolution R-2026-01, the standard annual instrument that sets the county's regular meeting schedule, rules of order and official board appointments for the 2026 calendar year. A supervisor moved to approve the resolution with appointment edits to show Cameron Lanahan on the Piedmont Council and the Regional Jail Authority; the motion was seconded and approved by acclamation.
Staff described the resolution as establishing the board's regular meetings in the General District Courtroom at the Nelson County Courthouse, the application of Robert's Rules of Order for conducting business, and the designation of statutory roles such as board clerk, deputy clerk, zoning administrator and hazardous materials coordinator. During discussion supervisors confirmed contingency language for meetings that fall on legal holidays and procedures should hazardous conditions require postponement.
In addition to Lanahan's additions to regional bodies, the motion included adding Sheriff Embry to the county's criminal justice board. The board approved the amended slate without recorded opposition.
The board then moved to the consent agenda, approving minutes of prior meetings (with one abstention by a member who was not present at the earlier meeting) and a budget amendment (Resolution R-2026-03).
What happens next: staff will publish the adopted organizational resolution and update official appointment rosters. Any officer or committee assignments can be altered later by board action.
