Hempstead marks 100th mile of repaving; resident urges priority work near California Avenue school

Reading a prepared passage that referenced Levittown and a recently paved intersection at Howell Court and Whittier Avenue, Jacobs said the milestone “represents our ongoing dedication to building stronger, safer, and longer lasting roadways across the town of Hempstead,” but then turned to a local safety concern. She described the condition of Bedford Avenue and Bedford Court near California Avenue Elementary as “craters” rather than potholes and said she would submit photographs to the town for review. “It’s an absolute danger to these children,” Jacobs said.
The supervisor thanked Jacobs, confirmed that California Avenue and the Bedford locations are Town of Hempstead roadways, and asked Commissioner Brian Kunzick and Commissioner Conzen to speak with Jacobs after the meeting. The supervisor said crews will fill potholes immediately where feasible and will prioritize sections such as Bedford Avenue during the spring paving season when repaving resumes.
No vote or action to change the paving plan was recorded at the Jan. 6 meeting; the town said it will review the photographs submitted by the resident and perform pothole repairs where viable before the next paving season.
Next steps: staff to review photos submitted by Pearl Jacobs and to prioritize repairs during the upcoming paving season; no formal reallocation of paving funds was discussed at the meeting.
