Fond du Lac district unveils AI handbook for staff and students, emphasizes ethics and digital citizenship
Summary
District leaders presented a draft artificial intelligence handbook developed by a 29‑member innovation team to guide teachers, students and families on acceptable classroom use, digital citizenship and data protection; administrators stressed training, family engagement and caution against sole reliance on AI‑detector tools.
The Fond du Lac School District's chief academic officer presented a proposed artificial intelligence handbook to the Board of Education, saying the handbook is intended to help teachers, leaders, students and families navigate generative AI while preserving academic integrity and privacy.
"The vision statement states that the Fond du Lac School District is committed to empowering future ready learners and leaders who use artificial intelligence and emerging technologies with purpose, integrity, and creativity," the presenter said, summarizing the handbook's opening vision. The packet distributed to trustees references existing district policy and academic integrity guidelines while supplying classroom resources for teachers.
The handbook, developed by an innovation team of 29 staff members with partner input from CESA 6 and neighboring districts, includes guidance for when and how students may use AI tools, suggestions for teacher use in assessment design, and protocols for reporting inappropriate or biased AI outputs. In the presentation the chief academic officer urged a "human–AI–human" workflow: start with human planning, use AI as a tool, then have a human check and refine results.
Trustees pressed how the district will determine whether students used AI and whether to rely on AI detectors. Board members noted detectors are imperfect; the presenter recommended against relying solely on detectors and advised using multiple pieces of evidence of student learning. Administrators also highlighted data‑protection concerns and said the handbook includes resources and training steps for staff and families.
Next steps: the district plans staff training and family engagement sessions and will refine the handbook as AI tools evolve; the handbook was presented as a first step rather than a final policy.
