Fifth grade music to align with elementary model, team to return in February

Kelly Downs provided a brief update from the K–12 music curriculum team and said a fuller presentation is scheduled for February. She reported one interim decision from visioning work: when fifth grade returns to elementary schools, instruction will emphasize general elementary music standards rather than a performance‑focused model.

Downs said the change reflects teacher feedback that an elementary model better supports the district’s instructional goals at that grade level. Committee members acknowledged the alignment rationale and had no questions at the time. No formal vote or policy change was recorded; the music team will return with more detail next month.
