Heather (filling in for Heidi) presented several policy updates on the consent calendar. First, a new policy will require prior approval from the director of assessment, school improvement, and research for any research project or internal survey in district schools; the measure formalizes current practice, including proposals from higher-education students and district employees.
Second, the board was presented with a revised animals-in-schools policy (8700) that adds definitions and clarifies when animals are not allowed on campus. The policy distinguishes required service animals from therapy animals (which will be permitted only with certification, supervision and administrative approval) and provides guidance for classroom pets and instructional animals.
Third, staff updated policy 4500 on extracurricular activities to align with UHSAA rule changes that allow ninth-grade participation in specific sports when seasons do not overlap. Staff said the revised policy will be on the consent calendar for approval at tonight’s meeting.
Finally, staff proposed a new policy implementing the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) requirements the district already follows in practice: maintaining internet filtering and monitoring systems, providing age-appropriate digital citizenship instruction, monitoring online activity and notifying parents of internet-safety practices. The policy was placed on the consent calendar; staff noted it codifies existing practices required by statute.
Board members asked a procedural question about visitor policy language to ensure visitors bringing animals coordinate with campus rules; staff agreed to consider adjustments prior to second reading. All four policy items appeared on the consent calendar for routine approval.
