Committee members reported that Jiggies Playhouse, a local program provider, has closed and discussed plans to continue programming for affected participants through town community centers and partnerships with local instructors and nonprofit groups.
A committee member said the closure left families without a regular location for adaptive activities and proposed that the committee sponsor art, cooking and fitness classes in existing community centers on the same days as other programs (for example, co-locating with karate classes). The committee discussed possible instructors: local chefs, art teachers and fitness coaches who already volunteer in the community. Members noted procurement and administrative requirements for independent contractors (W‑9s and procurement-office processes) and flagged that some instructors operate as businesses while others are independent volunteers.
The Down Syndrome Association of Miami expressed interest in partnering to support programming; the committee suggested inviting the association to present at a future meeting. Staff said detailed program structures and the list of instructors will be required before adding the item to the council report.
