Centre County commissioners on a January morning adopted a proclamation declaring January 2026 National Blood Donor Month after a presentation by a representative of the American Red Cross.
A Red Cross representative told the board the organization collects more than 40% of the nation’s blood and that only about 1–3% of eligible people currently donate. The representative said a single blood donation can save up to three lives, explained donation types such as whole‑blood, power red (double) donations and platelet donations, and noted FDA rules have changed over time so some older deferrals no longer apply. Local Red Cross teams run monthly drives in Centre County and the speaker encouraged residents who are healthy and eligible to schedule donations; donors through the end of January were also entered into a promotion to win Super Bowl tickets, the speaker said.
Commissioners praised the Red Cross’s local disaster and recovery work and thanked volunteers who staff blood drives. Commissioner (speaker 2) moved to adopt Proclamation 2 of 2026 proclaiming January as National Blood Donor Month in Centre County; the motion was seconded and carried.
The proclamation will be available at the commissioners’ office and a ceremonial photo followed the vote. The Red Cross representative encouraged anyone with questions about eligibility or local donation dates to visit redcross.org or the local Red Cross website to schedule a visit.
