Summary
Phoenix is using more than $7.6 million from a voter-approved Go Bond to plant trees, install shade and add green stormwater infrastructure to reduce urban heat, with the Phoenix Navigation Center project cited as the first completed site.
An unidentified presenter said Phoenix will use more than $7,600,000 from a voter-approved Go Bond to fund projects intended to reduce urban heat and increase comfort in vulnerable neighborhoods.
The presenter said the city’s heat-resilience investments will include planting trees, building shade structures, installing reflective surfaces and adding green stormwater infrastructure on city facilities and other high-need sites. “Through the Go Bond approved by voters, Phoenix is investing more than $7,600,000 to reduce urban heat and increase comfort in the places that need it most,” the presenter said.
The first project funded under the initiative was completed in spring 2025 at the Phoenix Navigation Center, where the presenter said crews installed 261 trees, more than 1,600 shrubs and multiple shade structures. The announcement described that work as an early example of the bond’s goals to expand canopy and reduce localized temperatures near city facilities.
The presenter said several additional projects are now moving into construction or design and that more cooling solutions are expected in the coming months. The briefing closed with a restatement of the bond branding.
