Volunteers behind BP Academy praised as commission recognizes District 4 'Great Yards' winner

Commissioners used part of the Jan. 7 meeting to recognize volunteer-driven youth programming and a neighborhood landscaping award.
Kristen Davalos, a volunteer leader at BP Academy based at Fletcher Park, told the commission the group is run entirely by volunteers who coach, mentor and organize programs for children. "BP Academy is built entirely on volunteer labor," Davalos said, listing partnerships with the Marlins, the Orange Bowl, Special Olympics, free and low-cost clinics and assistance finding housing for homeless families. Davalos said the program helps players earn college opportunities and builds community supports for families.
The commission also presented the District 4 Natalie Belmonte Great Yards award to Mr. and Mrs. Ackerman for their well-kept property; the vice mayor described the yard and presented a Home Depot gift card and the city's thanks. Commissioners praised the volunteers and encouraged continued community engagement.
The meeting began with Caitlin Burks, a McFatter School adult student, leading the pledge of allegiance and singing the national anthem; commissioners thanked her for volunteering to perform.
