Powhatan board honors teachers and National Board certifications

Powhatan County Public Schools used its Jan. 13 meeting to honor outstanding educators across the division. The board announced Teacher of the Year recipients at each school — including Cindy Raley (Pocahontas Elementary), Kristen Benson (Flat Rock Elementary), Amanda Henley (Powhatan Elementary), Mike Morin (Powhatan Middle), and Paula Duncan (Powhatan High) — and named the division‑level Teacher of the Year.
The board also recognized several staff who earned or renewed National Board Certification in areas including social studies, library/media, mathematics and exceptional needs. Administrators and board members praised the honorees for their contributions to student learning and professional leadership.
"Please join me in welcoming Cindy Raley as teacher of the year for Pocahontas," the presenter said during the awards segment. The board invited recipients to come forward for certificates and asked them to remain for group photography.
The recognitions were brief but unanimous in tone, and the board said it will celebrate again at the teacher‑of‑the‑year and retiree dinner scheduled for May.
