Council orders reviews of fire stations and city real estate after members raise safety and accessibility concerns

A resident told the council she had seen what she described as a "large, like, ball" of asbestos in a basement and said showers, sinks and windows at a station were not reliably functional. Councilors and staff acknowledged flooding in a station basement that draws water from the river, noted rodent activity and agreed that disturbed material could create airborne hazards. Councilors asked Chief Bacon (referenced) to update the July list of station repairs to show what work orders have been completed and what remains outstanding so the council and staff can prioritize interim fixes.
Separately, the council adopted a resolution asking the Committee on Public Safety to convene with the fire chief, the director of financial services and the union to study reopening or building a fire station near the Route 79/Veil Street corridor to address expected development and faster response needs.
The council also adopted a real‑estate oversight resolution directing the committee on real estate to review the status, condition and planning for all city‑owned real estate (including the Bank Street Armory and police stations) and asked that the Pine Street building (former veterans services site at 755 Pine Street) be reviewed with veterans' needs and continued services considered.
What happens next: Committee chairs were authorized to call meetings; staff and department heads were asked to supply updated work‑order records and facilities reports to support committee review.
