Blue Ridge Unified board opens meeting with moment of silence, honors students and staff

The Blue Ridge Unified School District governing board opened its meeting with a moment of silence for a student who died in an accident over the Christmas break. Speaker 1 identified the student as Nick Durham and asked the room to remember him.

The board then moved into an awards segment, honoring students and employees across the district. Miss Butler introduced Raylondo Henry as the elementary student of the month, praising his classroom performance and helpfulness in common areas. "He is an exceptional student at Blue Ridge Elementary School," Miss Butler said. Mr. Johnson, Raylondo's teacher, called him "the complete package," noting strong academics, leadership and kindness.

At the junior-high level the board recognized Mia Chase for academic growth and persistence; presenters said she improved three grade levels in reading during her junior-high years. Mason Schmidt was named high-school student of the month in absentia, with multiple teachers commending his leadership and positive influence in class.

Coach Clough presented Brax Clough as athlete of the month and introduced a new challenge-coin tradition intended to build fraternity among student athletes. The board also named Brian Bloemstrand choir teacher of the month and Christine employee of the month for taking on junior-high duties and supporting transportation and lunch responsibilities. Volunteers Luke and Brittany Harris were recognized for long-term support of athletics programs.

The recognitions were presented as part of routine board business; speakers emphasized parental support and community engagement as drivers of the students' achievements. The board then proceeded to the regular agenda.
