Chief Stewart told the council that agencies on the Palmetto 25 800 MHz network will be required to use encrypted radios by 2027, which will prevent scanner monitoring of transmissions. The city previously replaced in‑car mobile radios and half of handheld units; the current purchase will equip all Class 1 officers.
Staff said the purchase was competitively bid from local vendors and recommended the vendor used in prior purchases for continuity and interoperability with the sheriff’s office. Council discussed funding sources and staff said the purchase will use restricted asset/seizure funds (DEA/task‑force proceeds) budgeted for law‑enforcement reinvestment.
A motion to award the contract (amount discussed in the meeting at $185,008.71) was made, seconded and carried unanimously.
