Burns Harbor RDC votes to pursue Safe Streets planning grant with up to $30,000 local match

Tina explained the intent: the planning work is a routing analysis to improve connectivity and safety between neighborhoods and across busy roadways in Burns Harbor, including assessing the intersections of U.S. 30/20 with State Road 149 and how to connect to nearby trailheads. "This routing analysis is just a seed, the initial step of what will be many phases to get that project done," Tina said.
Commissioners debated fiscal pressure on Redevelopment Commission TIF funds and whether the town should commit local match funds while other projects are ongoing. One commissioner argued the planning step is important because it positions the town for future funding opportunities from INDOT or other programs. After discussion a motion to proceed with accepting the Safe Streets planning award and to authorize up to $30,000 for the local match passed on roll call.
The commission directed staff to move forward with the planning work and to report back on routing outcomes and any additional funding needs. The motion does not obligate expenditure beyond the authorized match amount and allows the town to complete the planning analyses that would enable future construction funding applications.
