The board voted to approve Bend International School's charter renewal request and directed staff to start statutory negotiations; the current charter expires June 30, 2026 and any final contract will return to the board for approval after negotiations.
BEND, Ore.
The Bend‑La Pine Schools Board on Jan. 13 approved a motion to begin contract negotiations with Bend International School on its charter renewal. Superintendent Dr. Stephen Cook recounted the charter history—first approved in July 2015 and renewed in July 2021—and noted the current charter expires June 30, 2026. Under Oregon law the district held a public hearing at its prior meeting.
"If the board chooses to renew Bend International School's charter request, we will start negotiations, and a final contract will be presented to the board for final approval," Cook said, noting that statutory negotiations are generally expected to conclude within 90 days.
Director Kina Chadwick moved to approve the renewal request and begin contract negotiations; Director Sheryl Olson seconded. The board voted in favor with no recorded opposition. Staff will report back with negotiated contract terms for board consideration and formal adoption.
The board did not vote on a final contract at the meeting; the motion authorizes staff to carry out negotiations required by statute. The district will return to the board with a proposed contract and timeline once negotiations are complete.
