The Coos Bay SD 9 board voted to approve the South Coast Education Service DistrictLocal Service Plan after a presentation by South Coast ESD superintendent Paul Peterson explaining tier 1 and tier 2 services and regional review.
Coos Bay School District trustees voted unanimously Wednesday to approve the South Coast Education Service District(South Coast ESD) Local Service Plan after a brief presentation and questions.
Paul Peterson, superintendent at South Coast ESD, told the board the LSP had been reviewed and approved by the 10 district superintendents in the region and by the South Coast ESD board. He said the plan preserves a set of tier 1 core services that benefit all districts (homeschool registration, audiology, birth-to-3 evaluations and related programs) while offering a menu of tier 2 services districts may select as needed.
Board members asked about specific programs and the ESDrole in helping districts restart transition and training programs that have become more costly under recent state changes. Peterson said the ESD tries to cover costs and stand ready to pilot programs when state rules change.
A motion to approve the plan was moved and seconded; the board approved by roll call with Arnie, Kim, Eric, Kevin, Katie, Diane and the chair recorded as voting —aye.' The adoption means Coos Bay will participate in the plan as presented and can select from the ESDmenu services during the coming year.
The LSP is intended to give districts flexibility over how to use resolution dollars and to concentrate ESD resources where individual districts need them most, Peterson said. The plan was described as largely unchanged from the prior year and intended to preserve local discretion.
