Lake Central High School plans new AP, dual-credit and CTE course offerings

Lake Central's secondary education staff presented a package of course proposals intended to align high-school offerings with new state diploma requirements and expand advanced and career-technical options.

Ed Beck summarized proposals that would add AP Business and Personal Finance, reinstate finite math as a dual-credit option, introduce a new second-year fundamentals of human services course (to align with changes in the human services pathway), and restore a swimming-for-fitness class to encourage lifeguard recruitment. The proposals also include technical-communication and dual-composition courses that can count toward a new communications credit required under the updated graduation rules, and an AP English 10 seminar to replace the honors English 10 section in order to expand AP access.

Several course name and code changes were presented to secure career-and-technical-education (CTE) funding for existing classes that will be represented under new state codes (for example, principles of interior design replacing older housing/interior-design semester offerings). Board members asked for curriculum guides and details about how dual-credit alignment and credits will be handled; staff said the district waited for the updated state curriculum guide and will continue developing course materials.

Board members voiced support and asked procedural questions about curriculum availability and how options will fit diploma seals. No final adoption vote on the courses occurred during the meeting; the presentation and packet were accepted for further development.
