Council to consider disclosure for buyers near agricultural operations

Councilmember Miss Ledbetter introduced Bill 99-25 on Jan. 13 to add a disclosure at closing when buyers purchase property in RA or RLD zones or within 500 feet of an agricultural operation, noting state and county right-to-farm protections already exist.
Ledbetter said the disclosure is meant to prevent future nuisance complaints by ensuring new neighbors understand agricultural operations’ rights. Administration staff said Queen Anne’s and Calvert counties have similar rules and the measure is intended to foster better relations between farmers and new neighbors.
The council had no substantive objections; staff noted the bill was a request of the Agricultural Commission and that the administration supports the proactive approach. The item was set to proceed to further review and drafting.
