Hunt County’s commissioners on Tuesday approved a resolution urging the Texas Legislature to exempt counties, county officials and employees from the state hotel occupancy tax when traveling on official county business.
Judge Stovall presented the resolution and read its rationale to the court, saying the measure aims to prevent what the resolution described as an inefficient practice of "tax churn," in which one taxing entity effectively pays another and local property taxpayers ultimately bear the cost. The resolution argues that exempting counties would align them with government and nonprofit entities already recognized under state law and would reduce administrative inefficiency.
Judge Stovall noted similar efforts in other counties and credited Judge Ransom for circulating the idea statewide. The court moved and approved the resolution by voice vote with no recorded opposition.
The resolution does not itself change law; it is a formal request that the county’s governing body is urging state legislators to consider drafting or supporting enabling legislation. Next steps were not specified during the meeting.
