Mercer Island to launch AMI customer portal next week; staff lead announces move to King County

City staff briefed the utility board on Jan. 13 about the imminent launch of a new advanced-metering infrastructure (AMI) customer portal and announced the portal’s project lead is departing the city.
“We are actually a week away from getting it launched,” Elaine told the board, previewing the customer portal that staff will roll out with a mailed postcard to every utility customer. Elaine said the portal allows customers to view hourly water-use data, set customized notifications, set up autopay, download historical usage and compare seasonal use. She said the portal is user-friendly and that customer-service staff have been trained to help residents set up accounts.
Elaine said four of six data-collection antennas are live and the system currently covers roughly 90% of meters; two additional antennas are scheduled to go live in the next weeks to expand coverage. The city will publish guidance in the MI Weekly and issue social posts and a press release to raise awareness.
In the same update, Elaine said she is leaving the City of Mercer Island after more than 17 years to take a position with King County. She described the portal as “my parting gift” and board members thanked her for her service and wished her well.
Staff said they will continue to support the portal launch and field customer questions during the initial rollout. The portal launch is an operational milestone the city expects will help residents monitor and control water use over time.
