County ratifies deputies' contract and hires new labor counsel

Hillsdale County commissioners voted unanimously on Dec. 23 to approve a collective bargaining agreement with the Police Officers Labor Council representing the sheriff's nonsupervisory unit and to authorize a letter of engagement with new labor counsel Schultz & Young, P.C.
The deputies' agreement was ratified by the bargaining unit and the board authorized the chair and vice chair to sign the contract on the county's behalf. The contract includes references to appended plan documents for health, vision and dental; the board discussed flexibility in appendix attachments, but included language allowing the employer to add alternate plan options over the life of the agreement.
Separately, the board replaced its prior outside labor counsel and authorized Chair Mark Wiley to sign a letter of engagement with attorney Gregory D. Schultz of Schultz & Young, P.C. Commissioners said the new firm has comparable rates to the previous firm and will assist with ongoing labor matters.
