During public comment, a parent said three district families were recently detained following court appointments and were deported, and she asked what concrete steps the district is taking to address the resulting trauma and anxiety among students.
"How are you addressing the emotional distress caused by the constant fear of separation and deportation?" she asked, requesting transparency and concrete actions including more security during practices, games and graduation events.
The superintendent said the district had invited Proyectofaro to give administrators an hourlong presentation about what ICE can and cannot do and offered additional training and presentations on mental‑health supports. He said the district will follow up with more detailed information at a future meeting.
Separately, Jennifer, a Spring Valley High School student representative, told the board students perceive a gap between Ramapo and Spring Valley schools in both environment and information. She said Spring Valley lacks murals and visible investments and that important college application information (for example, the CSS Profile and STARS application) reached students late.
"It just feels we feel neglected," Jennifer said, describing lower morale and a need for visible supports.
What to watch: the superintendent offered to present more on mental‑health supports and PTA collaboration at a future meeting; the board and administration said they would follow up on the parent's requests for clearer event protocols and stronger on‑site supports for affected families.
