Aransas County proclaims 2026 semiquincentennial; courthouse ribbon-cutting planned for Jan. 28

Aransas County commissioners on Tuesday approved a joint proclamation designating 2026 as a semiquincentennial observance for Aransas County, the city of Rockport and the town of Fulton as communities plan yearlong historical and patriotic events.

The court adopted proclamation JPDash01-2026 after Tracy read the text noting the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence and encouraging schools, civic groups and businesses to participate in commemorative programs, festivals and educational exhibits. The motion to adopt the proclamation was made, seconded and passed unanimously.

Pam Stranahan and volunteer organizer Doreen outlined plans for pop-up historical exhibits in the courthouse foyer and a schedule of red-white-and-blue events around town. Doreen said the county historic commission purchased 20 flags to be displayed at schools, fire departments and veterans groups and described a maritime exhibit on Spanish naval activity scheduled to open Feb. 2.

Organizers emphasized the ribbon-cutting and exhibits rely on volunteer time and donated resources. "No tax dollars have been used for this ribbon cutting ceremony," Doreen told the court, and the committee said refreshments, photographers and other support are being donated.

The court also heard logistical details for the courthouse-community-center opening and the exhibit schedule; staff said some pop-up materials will be on view in the courthouse after the grand opening and later transferred to the local history center. Commissioners encouraged community participation and coordination with statewide Texas America250 programs.

The court approved the proclamation and then proceeded with the day's other agenda items.
