Cary board honors retiring Police Chief Patrick M. Finland and appoints Nathan Hayes as next chief

The Cary Village Board recognized Police Chief Patrick M. Finland on Jan. 12, 2026, issuing a proclamation honoring his 12 years of service and contributions to regional training and the Cary Municipal Center. "Chief Finland demonstrated exceptional leadership, integrity, professionalism," the proclamation read.

Mayor Kownick told the board Finland had led the department since 2014 and praised his role strengthening mutual-aid partnerships across McHenry County. Chief Finland, who received the proclamation, thanked the board and department: "Just thank you very much for recognition," he said.

The board also voted to approve a resolution appointing Nathan Hayes as the village's next police chief and to approve an employment agreement. Mayor Kownick described a regional recruitment conducted with consultant MGT that drew 43 applicants, with six finalists interviewed and a unanimous recommendation for Hayes. Administrator Morimoto said staff supported the selection and expects Hayes to "embrace the culture" of the Cary department while bringing his own approach.

Under the approved arrangement, Finland's last day is Jan. 15 and Hayes is scheduled to be sworn in at the board's next regular meeting and begin work shortly thereafter. The board said Hayes will be given time to familiarize himself with the department before taking on new initiatives and that the transition aims to maintain continuity in public safety services.

No additional formal actions regarding department funding were taken at the meeting; trustees voted on the appointment by roll call and approved the employment agreement.
