School board adopts new policy to accommodate students with adrenal insufficiency
Summary
The board adopted Policy 3425, requiring parent-designated adults to be trained and an individual health plan for students with adrenal insufficiency, citing state legislation (Substitute House Bill 1709); the vote was unanimous.
The Vancouver School District Board of Directors voted unanimously to adopt a new policy, Policy 3425, titled "Accommodating students with adrenal insufficiency." The policy was proposed at second reading and approved after a presentation from district counsel.
Taylor Richmond, the district's lawyer, described the policy as a response to recent state law and recommended practices. Richmond said the draft policy "is a recommendation to adopt a new policy called accommodating students with adrenal insufficiency" and that it follows from the passage of Substitute House Bill 1709. Richmond said the policy "outlines the training requirements for the parent designated adult as well as requiring the development of an individual health plan for students who have adrenal insufficiency and who may need emergency care during the school day."
Board members offered no substantive amendments. Directors Sproul, Barrows, DiValo Ortega and Decker were polled and recorded approvals; the chair also stated approval. Later in the meeting the chair corrected a procedural omission (no motion had been recorded earlier) and, after consultation with district counsel, Director Decker moved to adopt both policies as a package; the board again recorded unanimous approval.
The board said the policy implements training and individualized health plans but did not provide detailed timelines or the names of departments responsible for training during the meeting. The policy was approved at second reading and will be incorporated into district policy materials.
